and i love her

we've got some serious puppy/kitty love going on over at our house.
the other morning i couldn't find winston or chloe, and found them curled up together on the bed.
i'm really glad they like each other. (stella is a different story)

20.7.12

this is the life

heat wave

As you saw a few posts ago, we've been having some record (albeit unfortunate) temperatures lately. And on Saturday, our air conditioning broke. 'It's a stiff. Bereft of life, it rests in peace [. . .] It's rung down the curtain and joined the choir invisible.'* While we were waiting for the guy to come fix it (who was at our place and had it fixed within thirty minutes) I put Stella in the bathtub and let her play with the cold water. She loved it, and even let me pour four large cups of water over her. What a nut. Doesn't even know that she's not supposed to like water.

*We'll be besties forever if you know where that's from without looking it up.

Columbia

Yesterday Candice, Julie and I explored everything downtown has to offer.

We ate at Mr. Friendly's in Five Points, and I had the most amazing pork chop of my life. It was topped with pimento cheese and an apple wood bbq sauce with mashed potatoes and collard greens on the side. It was so delicious. I only managed to get a picture of the fried green tomatoes appetizer because the pork smelled so good, I was halfway done before I thought to take a picture of it. Then I drove them around to all of the interesting things in Columbia. And Candice snapped a picture of my poor conehead, Stella.
It was such a fun afternoon; another outing is in order.

Existentialist cat for the win. How I adore existentialism. And cats. And French.

I thought about him today.

sammy as a kitten :: on the porch
in the front yard :: sammy and his best friend, rhubarb

This is my cat Sammy. I got him when I was four years old. We grew up together, me and him. He died on the last Leap Day four years ago while I was at school, and I was heartbroken that I didn't get to say goodbye. The pictures of us together are some of the last times I saw him over the Christmas break right before he died. Silly thing had to pick Leap Day, so now I can only really commemorate his death every four years. Maybe it was his way of making sure I didn't have a pity party every single year. Good cat.

miscellany

I spent the better part of last night on Gmail chat with my mom helping my brother finish his research paper on Julius Caesar. I was brought in for editing and forcing the brother to explain himself better. I even brought out my copy of Shakie's complete works to help him find quotations. I went to bed at 11. My mom bowed out at 1 A.M. My dad at 1:30.

In other news, one of my wisdom teeth may or may not be coming in. Happy Christmas to me. I'm not sure though. Never had a wisdom tooth come in before. What does it feel like? It's lost on me.
::
Spencer and I teach cub scouts now. That is, we teach four hyper, talkative, mildly hilarious eight year-old boys who may or may not be very easily bribed into following the rules by cookies.
::
I'm currently obsessed with Words with Friends and Barbra Streisand. (No relation between the two) But I can't seem to get enough of Funny Girl. Seriously.Can't.Get.Enough. I drive around belting it out (quite badly in comparison) with Babs. "My Man" gets me every time.
::
Filled in at my parents' gym today. The regular receptionist wasn't there. Went out to dinner tonight with my dad afterward. Just me and him.
::
A lady I know has a cat that she thinks might be pregnant. If it is, I might be getting a kitten just because kittens are so ridiculously cute. So cute it should probably be outlawed.
::
I found pomegranate flavored Jelly Belly jelly beans. Good, but not as great as the juicy pear flavor.

This time last year I was stressing about finishing all of my finals and getting married at the end of finals week. What were we thinking? But making it all happen.
With only a few gray hairs to show for it.

The picture in the middle is my favorite. It was Stella's first time seeing rain.
She was mesmerized, and wouldn't leave that window.

the king has returned

remember this post?

Last night we saw The Lion King. It was the very first movie I saw in theaters, and was just as spectacular on the big screen yesterday as it was when I was five. It always has been and always will be my favorite movie. It's only in theaters for two weeks. Hurry and go see it.

A Tale of Two Cats

A few weeks ago Chloe saw a moth in our house. Since then, she's convinced that every little dark spot - be it a shadow, a dark spot in the pattern of the kitchen tile, or a speck of dirt - is a bug. She chases these "bugs" all day long, but when she sees a real bug, she loses it. She stares the bug down while meowing at it. I'm not sure what she thinks that will do. Then she runs to find me, uses her "I just found a real bug" voice and takes me to where the bug is. All normal kitty instincts to hunt are lost one this one. Clearly, she's been a house cat her entire life. Stella, on the other hand, is an adventurous little kitty. We think she must have been a stray before we got her. Stella chases the bugs down. She pounces. She eats them. All we have to do is kill the bug or knock it down, set Stella in front of the bug, and it'll be devoured in the next few seconds. All the while, Chloe still meows in the background.
